The Highlanders Against Sexual Violence (HASV) Peer Education Program at UC Riverside was launched in the spring of 2015 to raise awareness throughout the UCR community about occurrences of sexual violence. It is the program’s goal to partner with on- and off-campus community resources in an effort to educate on the topics of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, stalking and healthy sexuality. One of the objectives of the program is to promote activities and attitudes that will contribute to the elimination of acts of violence and to foster creating a safe atmosphere for all UCR community members. Peer educators play an important role by acting as student leaders on these issues, having the unique ability to access student populations, and are dedicated to working with the student body to create a campus culture that values respect and consent. Students who have significant leadership experience and have demonstrated a commitment to sexual violence education and prevention (typically through commitment as peer educators) may serve as a peer coordinator and work in collaboration with the assistant vice chancellor of health and wellness, the Well’s interim director, Devon Sakamoto, and other campus administrators whose work focuses on sexual violence education and prevention such as the CARE advocate, Women’s Resource Center, LGBT Resource Center and Title IX, to fulfill the program’s goals. Highlanders Against Sexual Violence is part of a larger cohort of student leaders participating in peer education called Power of the Peers. Students in this program are exposed to a variety of topics as they interact with the Power of the Peers network and have the ability to attend workshops, speaker series, and trainings led by professionals and fellow peers.
