Terms of Service

Last updated: May 19, 2025

Welcome to Highlander Rating ("we", "us", or "our"), available at highlanderrating.com. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the platform. By using Highlander Rating, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the platform.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Highlander Rating — including browsing the site, creating an account, or submitting a review — you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy.

If you are using the platform on behalf of an organisation, you represent that you have the authority to bind that organisation to these Terms.

2. Eligibility

Highlander Rating is intended exclusively for current and former students, faculty, and staff of the University of California, Riverside. To create an account you must:

  • Hold a valid @ucr.edu Google account.
  • Be at least 13 years of age.
  • Not be prohibited from using the platform under applicable law.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that do not meet these requirements.

3. User Accounts

Accounts are created exclusively through Google OAuth using your @ucr.edu email address. You are responsible for:

  • All activity that occurs under your account.
  • Maintaining the security of your Google account credentials.
  • Notifying us immediately at contact@highlanderrating.com if you suspect unauthorised access.

We are not liable for any loss or damage arising from unauthorised use of your account.

4. User-Generated Content

When you submit a review, rating, or any other content ("Content") on Highlander Rating, you agree that:

  • Your Content reflects your honest, genuine opinion based on real experience.
  • You will not submit reviews for entities you have not personally interacted with.
  • Your Content does not contain false, misleading, or defamatory statements.
  • Your Content does not contain harassment, personal attacks, hate speech, or discriminatory language targeting any individual or group.
  • Your Content does not include private personal information about others (e.g., phone numbers, home addresses, personal emails).
  • Your Content complies with all applicable laws.

Reviews are displayed publicly under a randomly generated anonymous handle. Your identity is not shown to other users, but is associated with your review internally for moderation purposes.

5. Prohibited Conduct

You agree not to:

  • Submit fake, coordinated, or incentivised reviews intended to artificially inflate or deflate ratings.
  • Create multiple accounts to circumvent the one-review-per-entity limit.
  • Impersonate any person, professor, organisation, or UC Riverside official.
  • Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to scrape, crawl, or harvest data from the platform.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the platform or its underlying systems.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the platform's infrastructure or other users' experience.
  • Use the platform for any commercial purpose without our prior written consent.
  • Submit spam, advertisements, or promotional content in reviews.

Violations may result in immediate account suspension or termination and, where appropriate, referral to UC Riverside or law enforcement.

6. Content Moderation

We reserve the right — but are not obligated — to review, edit, or remove any Content that we determine, in our sole discretion, violates these Terms, is harmful to users or third parties, or is otherwise objectionable.

To report a review that you believe violates these Terms, contact us at contact@highlanderrating.com. We will review reports and take action as we deem appropriate.

Removal of Content does not imply we have reviewed all Content on the platform, nor that we endorse Content that remains.

7. Intellectual Property

Platform ownership: The Highlander Rating platform — including its design, code, branding, and all non-user content — is owned by Highlander Rating and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, reproduce, or distribute any part of the platform without our express written permission.

Your content: You retain ownership of the reviews and content you submit. By submitting Content, you grant Highlander Rating a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to display, reproduce, and distribute your Content on the platform and in promotional materials related to the platform.

You may request deletion of your Content at any time by contacting us. Following deletion, your Content will no longer be publicly displayed, though copies may remain in backups for a limited period.

8. Disclaimers

Highlander Rating is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any Content on the platform. Reviews reflect the opinions of individual users and do not represent the views of Highlander Rating.

Highlander Rating is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to the University of California, Riverside. UCR trademarks and names are used solely for identification purposes.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Highlander Rating and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages — including loss of data, reputation, or revenue — arising out of or in connection with your use of the platform, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from use of the platform shall not exceed the greater of $10 USD or the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim (which, for a free platform, is $0).

10. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms of Service at any time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we may also notify users via the platform.

Your continued use of Highlander Rating after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you must stop using the platform.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law provisions. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Riverside County, California.
