Our Mission: Established in 2008, PODER seeks to provide assistance to undocumented students through mentorship, financial assistance, and community building. PODER is aware that the Riverside community lacks such resources for the immigrant population; therefore PODER serves as a pipeline of information for those in need. Goals of PODER: Provide a safe environment where undocumented students can feel at home with a group of people who understand similar struggles. Educate the community about Assembly Bill 540, CA DREAM Act, Deferred Action, and immigration reform. Assist undocumented students in the transition from high school or community college and provide mentorship. Provide financial assistance through scholarships and/or other resources. Advocate for the rights of all undocumented immigrants. What We Do: Annual Events: “Dreaming of a Higher Education” Conference: Our annual conference brings students from the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley to UC Riverside for a day of workshops and presentations regarding AB540, CA Dream Act, DACA, Access to Higher Education, immigration policy updates, among other topics that are crucial to immigrant communities! Immigrant Awareness Week: We dedicated a whole week to bring awareness to UC Riverside about immigrant communities and their intersectional identities. Coming Out of the Shadows: During Immigrant Awareness Week, PODER hosts “Coming Out of the Shadows” event at the Bell Tower. Students have the safe space to come out publicly as undocumented and share their stories. On April 3 rd , 2014 PODER hosted the first “Coming Out of the Shadows” event at UC Riverside to empower our undocumented peers to be “Unafraid and Unashamed”. “Investing in the Dream” Fundraiser Banquet: Our annual banquet helps raise scholarship funds for undocumented students.
