Pre-SOMA is the undergraduate branch of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA). It allows pre-medical students to explore osteopathic medicine, connect with DO students and physicians, and decide if the DO path is right for them. The Pre-SOMA Committee promotes osteopathic medicine, supports aspiring DOs, and provides networking and educational opportunities. A DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) is a fully licensed physician who can practice all areas of medicine, including surgery. DOs receive additional training in osteopathic manipulative medicine and focus on whole-person, patient-centered care. SOMA, founded in 1970, is the largest osteopathic medical student organization with over 15,000 members. It supports osteopathic medical students, represents their voices within the American Osteopathic Association, and helps shape the future of osteopathic medicine. SOMA is student-run at both local and national levels.
